Singer/songwriter Coke Hendry is set to release his full-length debut album ‘Stress And Medicine’ on March 3. Drawing influence from Texas music legends such asTownes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Billy Joe Shaver, the San Angelo, TX-based artist delivers a distinct collection of songs rife with expansive arrangements, bluesy, roots-hued twang and visceral ruminations on life, love and loss.
Recorded at yellow DOG Studios in Wimberley, TX, ‘Stress And Medicine” was produced by Grammy Award winner Adam Odor and features ten original songs all written or co-written by Hendry. For this project, he enlisted a grab bag of all-star Texas talent to lend a musical hand including backing vocals from Mike Harmeier (Mike and the Moonpies); Geoff Queen (pedal steel); Nate Coon (drums, percussion); Michael Tarabay(bass); Dave Percefull (organ) and Scott Davis (electric guitar, Wurlitzer piano).
Of the new music, Hendry says “There were about ten years between my first EP and the making of this album. During that time, I experienced many ups and downs. Through those highs and lows, I have grown musically and personally on many levels. I really feel I found my tribe with everyone involved on this album, and I think you can hear that in the music. A strong foundation at home had much to do with that growth as well, and I have my wife and kids to thank for that.”
“This album is a collection of songs I wrote over several years. Some came to me quickly while others did not. I never like to rush a song or a lyric. Honest lyrics seem to reveal themselves on their own time.”
With its razor-sharp guitar riffs, album opener and first single “Pocket Full Of Dreams” is steeped in Southern rock and Americana followed by the raucous, hip-shaking “All For A Saturday Night.”
Other highlights on the album include the unrelenting “Bended Knee” with its atmospheric pedal steel and charging rocker “Buried Alive.” The sparse and reflective “Train From Sante Fe” rounds out the album with a cautionary tale about how our decisions can affect those around us.
Looking ahead, Hendry plans on touring throughout Texas in 2023. Stay tuned for tour announcements.
